And it is called a desert for a reason! |
But the day started off so lovely. This is a view from my bedroom. Each morning I see the sun rise in the saddle of two hills. |
We were working on the cooling system from a couple of days ago to make it better and repair some stuff we didn't do so well. As I was walking on the tar paper it was so soft that I left a boot print. Yep. Archeologists will discover it down the road and wonder what manner of creature made it. This is my legacy, written in tar and sand rather than the annals of Western history. I am small, indeed.

So yay Summer Solstice! Keep the days hot and long. And I'll just nap outside when I can. I mean, just look at me. Cool, happy, fat. I'm a dog this summer. Is the title "Dog Day Afternoon" already taken. Great movie if you've not seen it. Lumet directed a star-filled cast including Pacino.
Movie talk reminds me that I applied for the Masters program in Film Study at USF last year. But because I finished my first graduate degree so long ago they wanted me to take the GREs again. I said no, and took a class just because I wanted to ("Experimental and Documentary Film"). Well I fell in love with the professor (But I didn't get her pregnant her husband did. Now they have two kids.) I emailed the program director and told him how much I loved the class and shared with him my film.
I said the GREs are crap and it cost $180. He said it is a hurdle and that he'd pay for them. And he did. I took 'em. I'm in the program and I'm stoked! It is crazy that Shorecrest will not find its way to pay for the classes. I guess money is tight everywhere, but WooHoo I'm doing it anyway.
Whew. That's one heck of a film. I'm proud to be your friend. And thank you for answering all my political questions.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the sweet comments. That's not very curmudgeonly of you!
DeleteI didn't write about this, but the video was part of my final project for the class that I took. I had to write a paper, too. The options from the beginning were to write a 20 or so page paper or make an experimental/documentary film with a 12 page or so paper. Pssshhht. Make art and learn? You had me at make a film. It took a couple of months to put together because I went through all of the processes that I make my kids go through. Then I asked the Head Shed if I could show the kids the movie and my processes. Mr. Dillow and the team said fine and the kids were okay with it; some appreciated it more than others.
Then I posted it to the Teacher/Staff list server at school. I attached my paper to it and talked about the hows and the whys and described why I used it as a teaching tool. Mr. Murphy came to me the next day and, while he didn't dress me down, he did intimate that I should put a label on the things that are political. I said it was totally personal with no politics involved. He reminded me of the song disparaging Bush. I said I would have done he same to Obama because he is doing everything that Bush did, as it applies to war and imperialism. We agreed that I send him my materials before sending it out.
Mike is very patient with me and my beard, and I owe him much for welcoming us into the community. He has been so supportive of me and my endeavors, so it seemed such a small thing to run stuff by him. I still have my personal YouTube channel for stuff that may be too edgy. And since I plan on going through this two year program in four years or so I expect to have much material.
Who is this Bob Piccard who knows about the 25th Combat Engineers?
Really big smiles and lots of hugs to you.
I was a combat engineer. That's a twenty-fifth division patch. And the machine gun is a .60 caliber, I think. So I like your film.
ReplyDeleteYou are right on both accounts, Bob. I was with the 25th when they were in Iraq. Thank you for watching it and liking it.
DeleteSmiles to you.
But now I think it's a twenty-fourth division patch. Twenty-fifth division called themselves Tropic Lightning because they had a lightning bolt on their patch. We called them Electric Strawberry.
DeleteYou're right, of course. I was with the 5th Combat Engineer Group with the 24th Infantry Division. They were out of Ft. Stewart, GA when I was in. I came to them from I Corps out of Ft. Lewis, WA. I was on a Mobile Task Force that went to the 5th. I hated leaving my unit, but that was the nature of the deal.
DeleteSmiles to you.
