Boquerón Beach and our Service

Part of our trip was to include a morning of service at a school. We found out once we got their that the summer program had been shut down. We had to choose between going to an orphanage for boys of cleaning up a beach. While we all wanted to go to the orphanage, we were told that there was a very strict dress code (ex. pants for women). So, we headed to clean up Boquerón Beach before enjoying the sand.

Boquerón is a very popular beach. We picked up enough straws to supply Dunkin Donuts for a year! As we were cleaning a woman asked where we were from and why we were cleaning. She was impressed with the hard work of our students and went to grab garbage bag and gloves to help out.

Once we were done we came across the four men who are responsible for maintaining the beach. Now, this is a big beach. There is no way these four people could keep up with it all! As a thank you for cleaning they took out a machette and cut us up some coconut. This was the sweetest coconut I have ever tasted! Bethsabé loved it!

We spent the rest of the day splashing in the water, going for banana boat rides, and exploring the town.

Before heading to the hotel we stopped at Copamarina, a beach resort in Guánica. This gave the parents time to relax with we took some time with the kids to reflect on our trip. It was delightful to hear them talk about their experiences. They were taking it all in. Learning and having fun. Mission accomplished!
